Love Wins Because it Never Fails

When things go wrong; when we're down on our luck; when it seems like nobody is listening; when it feels like there is no way out, remember:

Why Does Love never fail? Because love is not just another attribute of God among many, Love is the very essence of God (1 John 4:8).

It might feel like Love has failed us at times. Our friends may desert us (Luke 22:54-62), our peers may mock us (Matthew 27:27-29), or we may be betrayed by the ones we love (Ezekiel 16).

But ...

God remains love, and keeps us in his love at all times. No matter what happens, Love wins because God is Love. The Cross demonstrates the amazing scope, and terrifying danger of this reality. Jesus, who is "God with skin on", or "God enfleshed" or "God with us", shows us God's love by dying for our sake, while forgiving the ones who were killing him! (Luke 23:33-34)

What does it means for someone to die for someone else's sake? The best way to explain it is by reminding yourself of a time when someone went to great lengths, and at great sacrifice to themselves (their time, money, possessions etc) in order to do something that benefited you.

Now take that moment and multiply it by a trillion. Why? Because the benefit we received from Jesus going to his great lengths, and at great sacrifice to himself is that all barriers for us coming to God are gone. This means that all the religious requirements have been fulfilled, all of the bad stuff we may have done or the people we may have been no longer hold any weight on our ability to come to God just as we are. God is not angry.

In other words, God just accepts us. Period.

It's true that there are times where we simply need to stop what we're doing and do something else. Some obvious examples: Have you been lusting after every one you meet? You need to stop now, because that way of relating to people is a destructive force in your life as well as the lives of others. It devalues people to objects. Or, have you been harboring bitterness and anger toward someone, or some group of people? This is also a destructive force that will only serve to slow-burn your life into rubble given enough time.

Get the picture? Me telling you to do something other than those things that slow-burn destructive patterns into your life is really just me saying: make the choice to love.

So, the truth that God simply accepts us is a truth that we can really lean into, and live into because it will produce healthier choices for us and in us. It's a truth that will propel us into deeper relationship and obedience to whatever God has for us. This is the kind of truth that will transform us utterly from the inside out, because its a truth that comes with the power of resurrection.

And let's face it, we all need resurrection from the lives we've been trying to live, the harmful views of God we've adopted, and the selfish modes of living we've embraced. We need to be rescued from our tenancy to hypocritically look down on others , and our tenancy to turn from everything that is right and good and just as we aimlessly try to find our own way in life. Whether we call ourselves Christians or not, We need Resurrection. We need Jesus. No one, and nothing else can provide us with the kind of transformation that we require.

19 Let them see the full extent of Your power that is at work in those of us who believe, and may it be done according to Your might and power.
Friends, it is this same might and resurrection power that 20 He used in the Anointed One to raise Him from the dead and to position Him at His right hand in heaven. There is nothing over Him.
