Destroy Racism

Chances are, if you are white, middle class and male, your view of anyone who is not white, middle class and male includes some a stereotype.

Sounds crazy, right? Unfortunately, it isn't.

The same can be true for racial minorities - they might look at white males with the same sort of preconceived notions that white males look at them with. The difference, however is that white males make up a majority cultural group in North America. The burden is therefore on white males to fight against our (very ingrained) racial prejudices.

Our default as human beings to choose to believe hyperbolically un-true stories about others over the more complex truths of reality. It's easy to believe all teenage boys from the ghetto are dangerous criminals, or that all aboriginals are lazy and just want handouts. It's hard to accept that these are stereotypes which categorize just a fraction of the populations being stereotyped.

But the truth is, white folks have everything we have because at some point, the government gave our ancestors very big handouts of land, money or other favors and freedoms. What did our indigenous brothers and sisters get? In Canada, it was Smallpox, The deplorable Indian Act, sent to live in some of the worst pieces of land in Canada, residential schools, and treaty money which barely covers essential services like education, sanitation and hospitals. Once per year, all treaty aboriginals in Canada receive individual lump sums based on the treaty their ancestors signed ... usually it's the sum of $5, or just enough for a large coffee and a muffin from most coffee shops.

:(

My wife and I lived on one of the biggest fly-in reserves in Northern Ontario for two years. Aside from an expensive daily flight, the only other way to get in and out of the reserve was via an ice road.

There are some really great human beings - natives of this land - living in this place, which is one of the most remote places in the country. But a host of factors was always there working against whatever good they could accomplish. Suicide rates were skyrocketing, drug and alcohol abuse was epidemic, sanitation systems were old, and most kids didn't make it past grade 10.

The reality we came to understand is that the too many aboriginal peoples struggle to make life work in a dominant European-style economy and culture. The added pressures that modern technology bring to our everyday lives are tinder for the already burning up of aboriginal cultures across Canada.

30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[a] 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] There is no commandment greater than these. - Mark 12:30-31

Here are some practical ways to do that today
